The Lance Effect

The bicycle is the world's most popular vehicle, and it isn't even close. According to reliable estimates, there are about 1.4 billion bicycles on earth, compared to only four hundred million automobiles. In this article we are going to discuss the growing popularity of cycling.

People have been using bicycles as a means of transportation for well over a century now. The most obvious advantage is that they are cheaper than every other option. This is particularly true in modern times as oil prices have become increasingly unstable and the environment is on everyone's minds.

But until only recently, competitive bicycling, or cycling was not a popular sport. Sure, there were a few big races like the Tour de France, but few sports fans knew the names of these great athletes or about accommodation in laquinta Golf Spain. What changed?

Well, sometimes a sport needs a single individual to rise above it and to become the face of the sport. And after winning the Tour de France for a record seven consecutive years, Lance Armstrong became the first superstar in the history of the sport.

Mobbed by fans wherever he goes, journalists often refer to the sports increasing popularity as the Lance Effect. This was evident on a recent stop to Australia where Armstrong invited fans to ride with him and cyclist Robbie McEwan. More than 5,000 cyclists showed up!
