Cycle to the Summit

The story of a ride from London to the UN Earth Summit in Jo'burg, S. Africa

Why?

Cycle to the Summit was a journey by bicycle from London to the Earth Summit 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Ruth Hollinger, Toby Hammond, Paul Bradbury and Frank Hindle set out from London on the 26th of November 2001 to cycle the 8000 mile journey to the Earth Summit being held in Johannesburg, September 2002. The team produced a video diary of their experiences of the trip, themed broadly around water, focussing on specific issues at various stages of the journey.

Aims

  • To cycle from London to Johannesburg in time for the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in September 2002.
  • To develop an understanding of the issues relating to water and the complex interrelationship that this has with other issues such as poverty, human rights and health.
  • To raise awareness about the issues relating to water in developing countries both at the Summit and on return to the UK in order to help people think about the implications of their actions.

Objectives

  • To complete the 8000 mile journey from London to Johannesburg.
  • To explore the issue of water, something particularly pertinent to Africa by visiting a number of water projects en-route.
  • To produce a video diary of these and other experiences which will accurately reflect the key issues and will be relevant to a wide variety of audiences.
  • To run a workshop in the week preceding the Earth Summit 2002 to emphasise the importance of water for everyday life and the urgency with which we must address the issue.
  • To show the video diary, deliver presentations and run a series of workshops on return to the UK to raise awareness about the issue of water and disseminate experiences relating to the Summit and the expedition.
  • To fundraise for Water Aid
